462 Visa – English language requirements
To be eligible for the 462 Visa, the rules state that in order to meet the minimum English language requirements you must have at least Functional English. You have Functional English if you meet one of the following:
- you are a citizen of and hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland
- you are a citizen of and hold a valid passport issued by Israel and have successfully completed an English Bagrut exam in the level of 3 study units
- you have completed a relevant approved English language test or assessment
- you have undertaken relevant education
Ways you can prove your functional English – is to show us evidence that:
- you are a citizen of and hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland, or
- an Australian Adult Migrant English Program service provider has assessed your English as functional
Or show us evidence that you have completed:
- English Bagrut exam in the level of 3 study units and you are a citizen of and hold a passport from Israel.
- all years of primary school and at least 3 years of secondary school where all instruction was in English
- at least 5 years of secondary school (in or outside Australia) where all instruction was in English
- at least 1 year of full-time study towards an award at an institution in Australia where all instruction was in English
- the part-time equivalent of 1 year of full-time study towards an award at an institution in Australia where all instruction was in English, or
- 2 years of a full-time studying or training for a degree, higher degree, diploma or trade certificate (in or outside Australia) where all instruction was in English
Or show us evidence that, in the 12 months before you applied for the visa, you scored:
- an average band score of at least 4.5 based on 4 parts of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test
- a total band score of at least 32 based on the 4 test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening of a Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)
- an overall band score of at least 30 based on 4 parts of a Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, or
- an overall band score of at least 147 based on 4 parts of a Cambridge C1 Advanced test
